Why a strap, what to look for, which ones work — and exactly how to pair one.
The Apple Watch's wrist sensor is genuinely good for steady efforts. Where it struggles is the start of hard intervals and anything with abrupt changes in pace: an optical sensor reads blood flow through the skin, and during those transitions it can lag or briefly lose the beat. A chest strap measures the heart's electrical signal directly, the same way an ECG does, so it locks on faster and holds through the messy parts. If your training is mostly intervals, that difference is worth a strap.
What to look for
- Bluetooth heart-rate profile. This is the standard almost every modern strap supports, and it's what lets a strap talk to your iPhone or Apple Watch and to apps. It's the one box that actually matters for compatibility.
- Electrode strap vs. optical arm band. A traditional chest strap is the accuracy benchmark. If you find chest straps uncomfortable, an optical arm band (worn on the forearm or upper arm) is a good middle ground — more accurate than the wrist, easier to wear than a chest strap.
- Comfort and fit. The most accurate strap is the one you'll actually wear. Dampen the electrodes before a run; a dry strap is the usual cause of erratic early readings.
- Battery. Most use a coin cell good for hundreds of hours; a few are rechargeable. Either is fine.

How to pair one (the part people get wrong)
If you have an Apple Watch, pair the strap to the watch, not the phone. On the watch: Settings → Bluetooth, then tap the strap under Health Devices. watchOS then feeds the strap's reading straight into your workout, and everything downstream — zones, alerts, the record — keeps working exactly as normal.
Only pair the strap to your iPhone if you're training without your watch. A strap holds one Bluetooth connection at a time, so a phone that has already claimed it will block the watch from connecting. If your zones suddenly go quiet, an accidental phone pairing is the usual culprit — forget it on the phone and pair it to the watch.
